Most of the falls of North Karnataka originate in Western Ghats. Rivers, elevations, and rains create spectacular waterfalls in North Karnataka. Belgaum district has more than 6 prominent waterfalls, of which Gokak falls and Godachinamalki falls are magnificient. Gokak of Belgaum district gets its name because of the Goki trees found in abundance in these areas. Green scenery of sugarcane, paddy and corn makes one refreshing.

Details of the trip:

Gadag – Gokak – Godachinamalki – Gadag

·    We started from Gadag (North Karnataka) around 7:00 am towards Gokak via Savadatti. Gokak is about 170km form Gadag and by the time we reached Gokak it was 11:00 am.
·     Waterfalls is the main attraction in Gokak, which is about 7km from the Gokak city. It is located on the river Ghataprabha. Gokak falls is also known as 'Northern Mysore falls' and is compared to Niagara falls because of their distinct horseshoe shape. Ghataprabha river leaps over the sandstone cliff amidst the picturesque rocky gorges of the rugged valley 52meters (170ft) down.

Around Gokak falls

·     There is a hanging bridge across the river for about 201meters (659ft) and is suspended 14meteres (46ft) above the rock bed. It gives a panoramic view of the serene nature and a river.

·     There are also monuments and temples dating back to the era of the chalukyas of kalyana on the banks of the river.
·    We then had a launch and headed to Godachinamalki, which is about 10km from Gokak falls. A walk of 2km from the village Godachinamalki takes you to a beautiful Markandeya falls, a best place for a frolic.

Tiny falls, Markandeya falls

·    It is located within a green valley. The area being a rocky bed facilitates the creation of numerous cascades of tiny falls before making a big jump. Instead of single steep drop, the river takes two gentle descents. It takes first fall from a height of 25meters (70ft) and flows into rocky valley. After a short distance from the valley, it takes second dip from a height of 18meters (50ft) before joining Ghataprabha river. It is indeed a pristine and rejuvenating falls devoid of noisy crowds. This magnificient falls glorifies the beauty of the nature.
